When we arrived in Madrid we wanted to make sure that we didn’t waste our time and explored as much as possible. This is one of the things I have regretted as although I have already been to Toledo, when the other girls visited Zaragoza my parents were visiting so I didn’t get the opportunity to go. They said it was really aesthetic and definitely worth a visit so I am planning on going there with my boyfriend when he visits after Christmas. City Life, the student help company here in Madrid, also recommend trips from Madrid and this is one of their most talked about recommendations so I definitely want to go before I leave next July!
After realising myself, Lucy and Kelly were on our own for over a week as Jasmine and Holly were going back home we decided we wanted to do something on our day off the following week. We looked into day trips and decided on going to visit Segovia. Its a small historic city just North West of Madrid which is known for its Roman history and beautiful architecture. After not much thought we spontaneously booked our tickets and we started planning our day in a new city.
Our train was booked and we arrived at 10:42 then headed straight for the bus station which took us right into the centre of Segovia. We had already made a rough itinerary for the day and wanted to visit the Aqueduct of Segovia, the Church of San Millán, Alcázar, the Royal Palace, cathedral and their ‘Plaza Major’. Luckily the majority of the recommended sights were relatively close to each other and we crammed in 18,405 steps to manage to see all we wanted before our train back at 19:15.
Luckily for us we booked our trip for a Wednesday as a lot of the attractions were free such as The Judería Vieja, Puerto de San Andres and The Real Casa de la Moneda. However, all the main tourist attractions are no more than €3.50 any other day and all of them were worth viewing.
For lunch we stopped off at El Bernardino for their 'menu del dia' which was only €16 for three courses, bread and a drink. After myself and Kelly ordered a white wine each they just left us with a bottle so we definitely got our moneys worth! Then our final stop, after lunch, was The Alcazar of Segovia, which was a medieval fortress which remained on a rock looking over the city where the monarchs of Segovia have lived for centuries.
Overall, I would definitely recommend visiting Segovia as its very cheap to get to on the train from the centre of Madrid and only a 30 minute train journey. It is a good day out, it's absolutely beautiful and there is a lot to see and do.
