After booking a few trips before we left Madrid in December our trip to Salamanca was the first of 2019! Salamanca is a city about 250km North West of Madrid and only cost approximately €20 when booking through Train Line EU which took about an hour and a half on the high speed train.
After receiving various recommendations from City Life and other students to go to Salamanca it was one of the first places we wanted to visit. Our train arrived into Salamanca at 10:30 and our train back wasn't until 20 past 6 so we had the entire day to squeeze in all the landmarks, sights and museums before we headed back to Madrid.
When we arrived it was a 20 minute walk to the centre which was marked by Plaza Major, very similar to the one in Madrid. As we were hungry we looked around Plaza Major for a while then headed to 100 Montaditos for some breakfast. We had the classic Spanish delicacy of 'Pan con tomate y jamon' (basically tomato and ham on bread) which is surprisingly very nice! After refuelling, we went to The Pontifical Tower which cost €3.75 to climb. The climb was tiring and I would not recommend if you're scared of heights! However, the view was definitely worth the climb.
After this we went towards the cathedral and tried to go inside but after realising that there was a €7 entrance fee we decided it wasn’t worth it as we could see the majority of the cathedral from the entrance. So we carried on and went to Casa Lis instead, which is an Art Deco Museum. We went inside and it was full of stain glass windows and because of how sunny it was all the rooms were full of colourful light! We then found a cafe inside so we got a drink and sat by the stain glass windows until it closed at 2:30 then walked over the Roman Bridge of Salamanca.
Our next stop was lunch. We searched on Trip Advisor and we decided to go to the restaurant rated first in Salamanca and it was actually quite disappointing. It was called Vinodiario. Lucy and I ordered three dishes to share between the two of us and a glass of wine! Although the potato dish and their speciality of Iberian pork sirloin was nice, the waitress suggested a blueberry and duck dish which was almost inedible! This definitely ruined the meal slightly but luckily one of our dishes was really nice.
After lunch our next stop was suppose to be Escuelas Menores de la Universidad de Salamanca which is a university but inside there are various murals. However, we spend about 30 minutes looking for it and then gave up and went to a cafe where I ordered a chocolate milkshake and it came in a pint glass! The day went so quickly and we already had to leave to make it back to the train station in time for our journey.
Overall, Salamanca is a lovely place, very picturesque. However, I think we did see all that there was to see so I wouldn’t go back again unless the train tickets were particularly cheap, especially as there are so many other places to see around Madrid. Next week we are going to Aranjuez so my next blog post will be about our trip and not only that today Kelly, Lucy and I have booked to go to Marrakesh in May!
