Holly's Birthday Trip to Toledo

Updated: Nov 25, 2018

We've been in Madrid just under 2 weeks and today was Holly's 22nd birthday! We had been planning it for a while and decided we wanted to have a day trip and find somewhere to visit outside of the centre of Madrid. After researching, we decided we were going to go to Toledo, an ancient city in Castilla-La Mancha in central Spain. It was about an hour outside of Madrid and we could use our Albono Travel Cards to get there so it was perfect for a day trip before drinks and dinner that evening.

One of the main reasons we decided we would go to Toledo was because of the 'Longest Urban Zip-wire in Europe' and although when we arrived we were disappointed by the height and length of the zip-wire, we went on it anyway as it was only €10 and something to do. It was fun and the views were incredible while hanging off the San Martin Bridge over the river.

There are various different areas for sightseeing, we went to the Cathedral Primed, Alcazár and the Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes as well as stopping for a three course lunch which was only €15 including bread and a drink. Considering we got all the way there using our travel cards it was a very cheap day trip. It was very different to the centre of Madrid and much more historical, cultural and the architecture was unbelievable. I would definitely recommend a visit as we had a really good day.

If I was to visit again I would definitely want to visit the Museo de la Tortura, we just didn't have enough time because of our dinner reservations. We got back to the centre of Madrid and went to Círculo de Bellas Artes, a rooftop bar which overlooks Gran Via and the rest of Madrid. It is well worth the €3 entrance fee for students even if you do have to queue for 45 minutes like we did. I will definitely be visiting again when I have my friends and family to visit as it's a really nice place to watch the sunset and see the thousands of lights over the city that never seems to sleep. However, the cocktails were €10 each and tasted like juice. I'd recommend having a spirt and mixer or just going up for the views!

We later had dinner in Taberna el Sur, one of our favourite restaurants in Madrid. I've had 3 things off the menu so far and have already decided it'll be somewhere I take my boyfriend and family when they visit. It is so popular there, always packed and the food is amazing. Although the food is not particularly 'Spanish', it is always filled with locals and it is definitely somewhere I would recommend if ever in Madrid.
