Aranjuez

Today was our second trip of 2019, not even 2 weeks after I arrived back in Madrid. We went to Aranjuez, a small Spanish town just south of Madrid. It’s famous for being on the River Tagus and being a very royally influenced town because of it’s very grand Royal Palace.

Of course, we couldn’t leave with visiting what the town is known for so they were our first two stops. We arrived at the train station after a 45 minute train journey, this is included on our Albono Travel Cards - which we found out after paying €8 for our return train tickets! We then walked for about 15 minutes until we were greeted by the Royal Palace of Aranjuez. The Palace was huge and luckily for us from 3-6pm it was free for members of EU countries. However, otherwise it was €9 entry. So after looking around the palace grounds it was only 2:30 so we decided to take a break in a little cafe which overlooked the court yards where Lucy, Holly and I had a jug of Sangría.

After having a sangria break we made our way back to the entrance of the palace. Throughout there were various staged rooms representing the royal lifestyle through grand staircases, 4 poster beds and over 300 rooms. The most interesting, and my favourite room being Moroccan themed with patterned tiles covering every inch.

After we had looked around we headed to the Plaza Major, San Antonio de Padua and Casa del Labrador before having to go back to the train station. Unfortunately, the last train home was at 18:30 so we didn’t get to explore all of the palace gardens. I would definitely be interested in exploring them but possibly when it gets warmer in the summer! I don’t feel like we made the most of the day and I definitely want to go back as we didn’t even nearly see everything. I think I might go here on another day trip when my parents come to visit as its so quick, easy and cheap to get too.
